The thought had barely made it through her mind when Devon stopped in the doorway, looked over his shoulder with a fire burning in his eyes that hadn’t been there before, and said “OH, I will see all of you, m’fhiorghra’ but only when you have the strength for what comes next.” He winked and exited the room, leaving Anya more breathless and aroused than before.
She soaked in the miraculous tub, enjoying the heat of the water and the feel of the herbs working the soreness from her muscles, invigorating her tired body. Wanting to get her hair washed before the water cooled, she turned on the water and attempted to situate herself under the faucet. As she shifted onto her knees, Anya realized a second too late that the bottom of the tub was more slippery than she thought. Her butt went one way, her knees the other, and without warning she slid under the water with an audible yelp!
Before Anya could resurface, two large hands were pulling her from the water as she spit and sputtered warm soapy water in a most unladylike fashion. Embarrassment damn near overwhelmed her as she refused to open her eyes, simply feeling around for the hand towel she knew was on the side of the tub. Devon’s hand met hers as he handed her the cloth and the same electric charge as before ran through her system, landing squarely in her womb. The sound of water pouring into the tub stopped.
After she had wiped her face, Anya sat perfectly still, eyes squeezed shut. She prayed Devon would just leave her in peace, to die of embarrassment. Instead, he spoke, “Are you okay, a chumann?”
She heard the smile in his voice and the thought of simply sinking under the water again bounced around her brain, but she figured he would just fish her out, so she answered, “Yes, I’m fine.” Anya knew she sounded like a petulant child and Devon’s bark of laughter only served to confirm her thoughts.
“What were you trying to do?”
She pouted a moment longer before answering, “I wanted to wash my hair but the tub was slippery. My top half zigged when my bottom half zagged and well…you know the rest.”
“Are you gonna open your eyes?”
“Nope.”
“Why?”
“Because…”
“Please?” She could hear him trying to hold back a laugh and bit the inside of her cheeks to keep from smiling. She was embarrassed…not flirting with the irresistible man that had once again saved her silly ass.
“Nope.” She worked hard to say that one word without laughing at the sheer ridiculousness of the situation.

Excerpt from

Epilogue of For the Love of Her Dragon:

Needing to stretch his legs and get some fresh air, Devon stepped outside, sure to keep the large doors at the end of the hall in sight. Watching a cluster of dragonflies flitting around the blossoms of an azalea bush, his mind wandered, and for the first time he heard the voice of the woman from his dreams during his waking hours. She sounded even more desperate than when he was deep in slumber. “Help me, please.”

He closed his eyes, focused on the echo of the voice, and spoke to her the same way he
communicated with his brethren, “
Who are you? Where are you?”

There was a slight intake of breath and then she answered, “Can you really hear me? Please tell me I’m not dreaming.”

He looked around to make sure one of his brethren wasn’t pranking him and saw nothing or no one that even looked familiar. “Yes, I can hear you.” He paused, realizing she hadn’t answered
his questions and decided to try a different approach to get the answers he needed. “
My name’s Devon. What is yours?”

There was no answer and the silence droned on until he was sure either he had imagined her or she had decided to screw with someone else. As he reentered the hospital, the voice came again, and this time it was louder and clearer, and if possible, more panicked. “Help me, please?”

His lack of sleep and frustration got the better of him and he snapped, “How the hell am I supposed to help you when won’t tell me where you are or who you are?”

Again his question was met with silence, but this time it made him want to yell or hit something, or act in ways completely uncharacteristic for him. There was something about her voice, something that he felt every time he heard it, something that called to him. He wanted to chalk it up to the fact that he was a sworn protector and she needed help, but he knew it went deeper than that.

Shaking his head to clear the cobwebs, he decided she was gone for real this time and took his seat next to reception.

It wasn’t long before Sam came out looking like she needed a weeks’ worth of sleep.

Trying to lighten the mood, he teased, “How’s tricks, Doc?”

She smiled and leaned against the desk, “Busy and beat, my friend. How about...”

He missed the rest of what Sam said because at that moment, his senses were assaulted with the scent of sand and the sea. It wasn’t a dream this time. It was real...and nearby! Without a word, he followed the tantalizing aroma, immediately locating its origin. A gurney quickly moving away from him with long dark tresses hanging off the side and an elegant olive-toned hand lying precariously on top of the white blanket covering the patient it transported was the source.

Devon raced to catch up but just missed the elevator as the doors closed. Using his
enhanced senses, he listened as the orderly pushing the gurney asked his companion to press the button for x-ray. He raced back to reception, grabbed Sam by the arm and quickly walked back to the elevators.

“What’s going on, Dev?” Sam asked, and it was the concern in her voice that made him stop
and explain.

“You’re going to think I’m nuts, but the woman that was just wheeled to x-ray has been
talking to me, through mind speak...in my dreams.” He waited for Sam to tell him he was crazy, but all she did was push the down arrow and smile at him.

“You aren’t taking me to the Psych ward are you?”

“No, silly man, we’re going to x-ray.”

“You believe me?” He was as surprised as he had ever been.

“Of course I do. Of all the things I’ve seen hanging out with you guys, this is tame,” she
laughed as the elevator doors opened and they stepped inside.

When they arrived at their destination, Sam used her access to look up the patient, but
came back knowing no more than they did before. “She is listed as a Jane Doe and they have no idea what’s wrong with her. She has no outward injuries, but has been unresponsive for almost six weeks and shows no signs of improvement.”

His heart sank and it apparently showed on his face, because Sam touched his forearm
before saying, “I’m so sorry, Dev. Is there anything else I can do?”

“I don’t know, Sam, I just don’t know,” he answered, and it was then that everything clicked into place. The mind speak, her scent, his undeniable need to help her no matter the cost, it was all there, but he had been too frustrated and too tired to see it. Devon blurted out what he was thinking,

“Holy shit, she’s my mate.”

Mom of two rockin' girls, Reader of everything, Author of The Dragon Guards series and many more
surprises to come!

I am a sarcastic, sometimes foul-mouthed, not afraid to drink a beer, always southern woman with 2 of the most amazing teenage daughters, a menagerie of animals and a voracious appetite for reading who recently decided to write the storiedrunning through her brain. I read my first book, Dr Suess' Cat in The Hat by myself at 4 and was hooked.

Laughing, they began their trek, joking and teasing but the fun was long forgotten after several hours of endless walking. Kyra was hot, tired and seriously pissed, convinced they were just wasting time, aimlessly marching around the hillside. She was just about to suggest a break when a chill ran down her spine and her hands began to shake. Without saying a word, she dropped into the lotus position with her backpack on her lap and began pulling out her supplies, completely ignoring Lance’s bitching and Devon’s inquiries about her well being It took only a few seconds and she had the silver-framed mirror that had been her great-great-grandmother’s, a vial of blessed water from the Black Lake, and her special herbs and was working her Scrying Spell. She could hear the two Guardsmen discussing what she was doing but concentrated on the task at hand. They had been around her long enough to know she wasn't wasting time; any other explanations would have to wait.

The spell took less than five minutes and had a side effect she had only experienced one other time in her life. Not only did she get a location on Andrew but she also had a vision of what he was planning. The scene that played out in her mind was like watching a horror movie only she could feel what each character felt. Her heart raced and a cold sweat broke out all over her body but she was stuck, watching the complete annihilation of a quaint little community tucked in a once beautifully lush valley. Everything she saw was from Andrew’s point of view so although she hadn’t seen him, she knew he was there but that was the only thing that felt familiar.

She searched the faces of the dead and injured for any indication of the target of the asshole’s destruction but nothing looked familiar and there wasn’t any sound to help. All she knew was that he was somewhere off a rocky coast with turbulent waters and he was having a great time hurting anyone and everyone in his path. The silent movie of destruction went on and on. When she was sure she couldn’t take any more pain and suffering and had decided to see what the guys thought about what she had seen, her heart ceased to beat and her lungs refused to hold air, there standing in the middle of the war zone was Royce. His brow was furrowed, his brown eyes scanning the area for those that most needed his help. Her heart broke when she saw the cuts and bruises covering most of his beautiful face and his torn, bloody and soot-covered clothes.

The horror show unfolding in Andrew’s mind switched to slow motion as Royce moved from person to person helping the living from the rubble and getting them to safety. He wasn’t the only one working rescue but he was the only one that mattered to her. He shouted something and she cursed the lack of sound. In the next instant, a taller version of Royce (Was that even possible?) appeared to his right. The resemblance was uncanny. The new guy’s hair was short and curly but an auburn red instead of bright red and he was not all muscular and hunky, more long and lean which only added to how absolutely tall he was. The two worked furiously to clear away the debris, looking for someone or something specific. Even though only a vision, she could tell they were engaged in a constant stream of mind speak, another wonderful perk of being magical.

An ominous sense of danger filled her and once again her breath stilled in her lungs. She watched as both men turned in unison and began running almost faster than her eyes could track. They were obviously screaming orders to anyone that could hear from the expressions they wore and the way their mouths moved. The feeling of impending doom engulfed every cell of Kyra’s body as she felt Andrew’s enjoyment grow. The sick son if a bitch was enjoying what he was seeing and delighted that more was coming.

Horror movies had never been her thing and to have the man that was her mate in a starring role in one that would be a reality was seriously freaking her out.

Sifting through everything she had ever learned that was stored in her goofy brain, she looked for a way to pull out of the vision. Finally, she found what she thought might work, but true to form, a bright light burst before her eyes, vibrations of an explosion she knew was taking place in her mind gave her the sensation of falling right before her world went black.
