Behind me, the door swung shut quietly in its hinges, locking itself after it clicked into the jamb.

"Justin?"

There's no answer. Maybe he's not home yet.

I'm putting my bag down when I hear the voice behind me. "Get up against the wall— NOW! Put your hands out," he demands.

There's no point in resisting. I step up to the foyer wall and nervously place my hands against it, waiting to see what the next move will be. My pulse is a loud whomp in my ears.

The sound of his footfalls fill the small space, approaching on me slowly, deliberately, until I see his feet on the floor between mine, his bare feet and bare legs. Strong hands lift the heavy coat off me and toss it to the floor beside us and then return to my shoulders where they begin to coil up my hair. A familiar hardness presses into the small of my back.

"I've been thinking about you all day," Justin whispers into my ear, making my knees weak.

"And what, exactly, were you thinking about?" I breathe, praying for his magical hands.

His left hand pulls my hair, turning my face toward his. "I thought about making you cry with pleasure. It's the only way I can tolerate your devastating absence." He quickly bites my lower lip, tempting me. "I love you, Warrior. And I need you."

Justin's right hand slithers around to the front of me under the bottom of my shirt, rising up between my breasts to grab my bra like a handle. Then both of his hands pull me tightly against him, molding me into his warm body.

My lips ache for him, my hunger for the taste of his tongue spills over. "Kiss me, please!"

I beg. "Touch me like a man should touch a woman.

"I'm going to do everything to you that a man should," he growls.

His mouth finds mine, the pleasure of it searing all of my senses. He tugs my hair a little more and completes the seal between our lips, circling his tongue around mine. Underneath my shirt, his powerful hand lets go of my bra and gently grabs my breast, pressing the fleshiness between his fingers. He lets me hear a low moan deep in his chest. It's more felt against my body than it's heard by my ears.

It doesn't matter that I want more, that my clit is throbbing for his touch, Justin makes me wait for it. He releases my hair and my breast, both hands moving to the bottom of my shirt where he pulls at it uncaringly, ripping it over my head and tossing it on top of my coat. My bra comes off me with the same ease, and he spins me around to face him, pushing my back against the wall.

"My fucking God! I will never get tired of looking at you," his deep voice confesses while his eyes widen with lust.

There's no misunderstanding him. My own eyes were taking in his fully unclothed body with the same excitement and enthusiasm. The thick muscles of his chest rise and fall with his heavy breathing, and his well-defined shoulders beg me to claw my nails into them.

Christ! How does he stay in that shape?

Fuck it—I don't care!

After a full day of writing on my phone while at New Hope, PA, without any backups in weeks, a glass of water was spilled directly on my phone. Everything was ok, but lesson learned!

I’ve spent nearly every single weekend waking up before everyone in my home, including our dog, to get a few hours of writing in peace.

Justin has his arm around me, lightly playing with the hair behind my ear as we watched the streetlights come to life, quivering over the water's surface. The gondolier is actually humming a song now, but I think it is more to occupy himself than us. Our conversation drops off comfortably, and we enjoy the cool night. I take the opportunity and begin kissing the side of his face, following his strong jawline.

"If I told you that I'm falling in love with you, would you believe it?" Justin asks me suddenly.

My heart is instantly pounding, and much too loudly to deny it. I'm sure it's sending ripples out on the water as it shakes the boat. "Yes," I answer through the huge lump of emotion in my throat.

 "Even though it would be a lie?" he adds softly.

"A lie?" I repeat painfully, insulted and devastated.

"I couldn't fall for you anymore. The truth is I've already fallen. I've even tried to get back up only to have you sweep the feet from under me again. I'm breaking the biggest promise I've ever made to myself, Charity." He turns to me, placing a hand on my cheek. "Despite all my efforts, I am hopelessly and endlessly in love with you. I don't want to know another day without you, I couldn't survive it."

He is looking at me for a response through two very vulnerable eyes. There is no catching my breath, or my heart. They are galloping around the lake like wild horses, without any reigns to control them by. I am lost in the dust of their hooves, unable to breathe, to form words and utter a cohesive sentence in reply.

“That’s no fun,” Peyton teased. “How about I give you the apple and also what I think you’d like, and then we’ll see?”

“Sure,” Reed said with a shrug. “How can you tell?”

“Let me see your hand,” Peyton said, a twinkle in her eyes.

“Are you some kind of palm reader?” Reed held out his hand and gave a smirk to Bret — as if this was the most ridiculous thing he’d ever done.

“It’s nice you do what you’re told,” Bret quipped.

 
Peyton slipped her hand into Reed’s, and a sudden electrical charge shot between them. She flinched at the contact, her baby blue eyes flying wide open, but he gently closed his fingers around hers, never letting slip a chance to hold a pretty girl’s hand, even if he didn’t believe any of her pie witchcraft bullshit. Quinn cleared her throat to voice her disapproval. But Peyton and Reed both ignored her, leaving Quinn to frown and grab a nearby table with Bret.

Reed studied her as she worked, or whatever the hell she was doing. She was a natural beauty — her baby blue eyes, long brown hair, and fair skin, without a stitch of makeup — a far cry from the overtly sexy model he usually went for. He memorized her perfect pink lips, knowing what they could do for him, and the curve of her neck, a silver locket dangling from it. He saw something else, too — at least he thought he did. There appeared to be some complication about her, some sadness behind her pretty eyes, something she was trying to hide.

I could make you happy.

Peyton examined the shape and lines of his hands but found it hard to focus, a part of her wanting to run and hide, another wanting to run her hands through his dark, messy hair, to feel the slight stubble on his face, imagining his hands running down her body, her breasts against his washboard abs.

Then she caught herself and drew a deep breath, her stomach churning, a million butterflies floating around. She looked up from his hands, into his steel blue eyes, shocked by her attraction to a man she knew nothing about. “You are devil’s food chocolate praline.”

The house was quiet and April paced the floor. She played her guitar, attempted to write a new song...but she didn’t get very far.

Several times, she peeked through the window, hoping to catch a glance of Dante coming out of the garage.

Ten minutes passed, then thirty, until she could no longer ignore the raw need burning in her loins.

With one thought on her mind, she made her way to the garage, determined and free of doubt. Dante’s jeaned backside was the only thing she could see when she approached. “Dante?”

He jerked, hitting his head on the hood as he showed his face. He rubbed his scalp. “I’m almost there. I’ll need to get you some new plugs—”

“Dante?”

His brows curved. “You okay?”

“I want you,” she said without inhibition.

He dropped the tool. “April, I’m not sure—”

She reached for the hem of her shirt and dragged it off. Her nipples bunched and his jaw clicked. She’d gotten his undivided attention. Next, she slid off her shorts and thong, and relished in the concentration that swept across his features.

“You’re going to be the death of me.” In three quick strides, he was across the cement and standing in front of her. She dropped her gaze to the bulge behind his fly. “I’m dirty.” He held up his hands and turned them, showing her his fingers covered in grease.

“But this isn’t.” She hooked her fingers into his belt and unlatched the buckle. Slipping her fingers past the leather, she undid the zipper and tugged his jeans down his legs. His erection had grown above the waist of his boxers.

“These must go.” She dragged the material down to his knees. “I want to taste you.”

“Won’t hear any complaints from me.”

Dante couldn’t believe what he was looking at. April Rayne, in flesh and blood. He swept a quick glance over her and every place on his body jerked alive. He scrubbed his jaw, wishing he’d left the house fifteen minutes earlier instead of drinking another cup of coffee. A reunion with her was the last thing he needed, although the now solid part behind his zipper begged to differ.

Why did she show up? These weren’t her roaming parts of the country.

“Too bad about your car, but we don’t drive like that in these parts,” he snapped. “If you were watching the road you would have seen me coming.” He wasn’t sure why he was so angry. Neither was hurt, except he sure did feel an ache building in the pit of his stomach.

A stitch in his groin made him shift in his boots. He didn’t like how his body betrayed his mind, not one bit.

“I was watching the road, thank you! The sun reflected off your hunk of metal and blinded me!” Her fists plopped onto her hips as her chin came up in a defiant angle.

Her attitude and searing tone was lost on him. There was no way he’d let her get a rise...in his mood or his jeans.

She couldn’t slip back into town and act like everyone would cater to her, especially not him. “My hunk of metal? Maybe you need to learn how to drive a fancy car on a gravel road. You’re lucky you didn’t kill yourself, and me.” He marched back toward his bike, ready to hop on and hit the pavement. “By the way, why choose something like a luxury car out here on these back roads? I guess you have a reputation to withhold, but the closest neighbor is ten miles up and they wouldn’t care about your celebrity status anyway.” He shook his head in frustration.

“Then what’s your excuse for the expensive ride? Aren’t you a little too old to have a toy?” She was right on his heels.

He stopped and turned. “This is a vintage Harley.”

“Oh, did I offend your toy’s feelings? Or did I hit upon the truth?”

He glared at her. “What are you doing here, April? Last I knew, no one died.”

Her lips thinned and her green eyes glinted murder. “What are you? Visitor patrol? Get off my ass.” She turned and stomped toward her car.

“I’d slow down if I were you,” he yelled across the lane.

Once her cowboy boots hit the muddy grass, her feet went opposite directions. With flapping arms and a loud squeal, she attempted to gain control of her footing, but it wasn’t happening. She fell to her bottom and slid down the slippery slope.

He hurried back to the ditch and stared down at her red face. Once he realized she was okay, he said, “Let me help.” He held out a hand.

Her icy glare could have frozen lava. “Get away from me!”

“Fine.” Stepping back, he watched her stand up, slowly. She finally made it to the driver’s side and reached in, pulling out a purse. He half wondered if she planned to smack him over the head with it until she dug deep, searching and finally pulled out a cell phone. She fiddled with the device as her jaw tightened. “Oh no. This can’t be possible.”

She held the phone high above her head, twisted it in several different angles and then carefully made her way back up the ditch. “How is this possible? We’re living in modern times. Every nook and cranny of this entire world should have service.”

“Welcome to the backwoods of Texas, darlin’,” he growled.
